Staff and locals at the Ellesmere Hotel recently got under starters orders, for a race night in aid of the Shropshire and Staffordshire Blood Bikes, raising a fantastic £465 in the process!
Current Hotel owners Sandra Walford & Mark Griffiths have owned the Hotel for 7 years, but have only been running it themselves since June 2015.
They decided to run a ‘Race Night’ with proceeds going to SSBB because of the lifesaving work the blood bikes do in the local area, and because 100% of donations are directly used to enable the charity to continue operating. No funds are diverted elsewhere, all our members are unpaid volunteers.
On the night, SSBB Fleet Manager Nigel B gave an entertaining talk, supported by duty rider Steve C who had a bike on display.
The Ellesmere Hotel was built in the 1700’s and has a long and interesting fundraising history.
In 1792, the grand sum of £1m was raised in just one weekend by donations for the canal…that equates to a massive £108 million pounds in today’s money!
Paul C, Shropshire Area Leader for SSBB, went along to the hotel with a small group of charity volunteers, to collect the money and express their thanks. Mr C said “We are always extremely grateful when local people go out of their way to fundraise for us, we rely completely on donations to keep our service running and every penny is extremely important to us. Thank you to everyone involved for their fantastic support”
