Blood Bikes Then & Now!

Evening All

SSBB Chairman Chris Powdrill surprised BBC Radio Shropshire’s Jim Hawkins by arriving for a radio interview riding a 1960’s Triumph Twenty One. The Bathtub as it is known, is similar to the early Blood Bikes which featured in a BBC documentary which some of our members may remember. The 349cc T21 launched in 1957 was the first of the Triumph unit construction twin cylinder motorcycles built in Meriden. The gear change is on the right, brake on the left and the kick start is temperamental but did not defeat Chris when he demonstrated the bike for Jim Hawkins.

Compare the 18bhp Triumph T1 which could just about manage 80 mph with the 2008 Yamaha FJR1300 with 144bhp which can reach 155 mph.

The full interview with Chris talking about the first four months of SSBB operations can be heard on BBC Radio Shropshire (96FM) on Friday 6th June between 10 and 12 midday.

The beautifully restored T21 is owned by Ivan Hawkins of Market Drayton.
